No matter what type of bathroom we are designing, we find we cannot go wrong with a black and white palette. That is not to say that all of our bathrooms look the same! Over the years we have designed black and white guest baths, black and white powder rooms, and black and white children’s bathrooms. It is a palette that can be dramatic, fun, chic, and is always timeless.
The first of the four bathrooms shown belongs to my children but it also serves as our guest bath. For that reason, we chose decor that is both young and fun but sophisticated at the same time. The Zebra wallpaper from Scalamandre was the perfect choice as it is loved by both children and adults and the black background makes it a little more dramatic yet still playful. One of my favorite features of this bathroom is the the light fixture we bought from Land of Nod. They have a fantastic selection of stylish lighting for children. The black piping around the light is such a great little detail.
The second bathroom – shown below – is from a renovation project we recently completed in Winchester. Our clients asked us to design a bathroom for their two young children, a boy and girl. They wanted us to create a gender neutral, chic bathroom that they would enjoy as much as their children for years to come. To achieve this, we used classic elements like a subway tile but made it more modern and interesting by using black grout. Solid white countertops are offset by a high gloss black vanity and black mirror and the black hexagon floor tile pops against the all white walls. We designed a bathroom for them that will not go out of style and has the modern, cool aesthetic they were hoping for.
As the interior designers for a home in Newton, MA we were tasked with renovating the powder room – pictured below. By painting the brick wall white, adding a sleek black countertop, black tile floor, and parisian inspired accessories, we were able to achieve the fresh European style powder room we envisioned. Black and white powder rooms are also a great option if you are not looking to spend a lot but want to design a chic and modern bathroom.
If you’re looking for a black and white design but one that is perhaps a bit more traditional and elegant, we have that for you too! Below is a guest bathroom that’s part of a condo we did all of the interior decor for in Boston. This palette varies from the rest we’ve shared as we used off-white instead of a stark white to give the space a softer, more delicate feel. We covered the walls in Nina Campbell’s Lomasi wallpaper in Black to achieve the dramatic and elegant guest bath our clients requested and although it is a very different style than the others we’ve shown, this guest bath shares the timeless quality we looked to achieve in all of these bathrooms.
